I’ve just finished reading the book “The Holy Secret” by James Ferrell. I started reading the book several moths ago after I had finished reading “The Peacegiver” another book by Ferrell. I really enjoyed reading “The Peacegiver” and when I first started reading this book I didn’t enjoy it as much as I had enjoyed that one. As I started to read it again though, I found that it was at least as good, if not better, than “The Peacegiver.”
James Ferrell has a unique style that I really like. He creates characters in his books that are very realistic. For example, in “The Holy Secret” the main character is Michael. He is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but he has become somewhat disenchanted with the church and the gospel in general. The book chronicles his decision to visit a member of his ward who gave a good talk in church and who he feels like he would like to talk to. As he visits this man, Albert, we learn more and more about Michael.
Michael in the story became a lot like myself in a lot of ways. Because I could relate to some of the ways he was feeling, the book really meant a lot to me. The book explains in simple terms how we can embark in the process of becoming holy, or in other words how we can come back into the presence of God our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. The book uses lots of direct quotes from the scriptures and also quotes from modern day prophets to explain these principles in a logical and straight forward way. As I was reading the book, I knew that I had understood many of the principles on some level before but having it all laid out in front of me at once was very nice. Several of the teachings that are addressed in the book are: keeping the sabbath day holy, attending the temple, and loving and caring for our families. I would recommend this book to anyone. It is an easy read but is inspiring and uplifting.
