Jesus Christ

TheGoodShepherdI believe that Jesus Christ is the Savior and Redeemer of the world.  That may sound like a fairly general statement and one that is accepted by most Christians but perhaps could use some more discussion.  Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world because it is only through the Atonement of Christ that men and women can eventually become united with God the Father and Christ in time and in eternity.  Christ suffered for the sins of the world so that we who have committed those sins do not have to suffer the consequences if we choose to follow Him and access the grace that His atonement provides.

I believe that Christ is the literal son of God and that He chose to come to this earth as a mortal so that He could experience exactly what each of us experience in this life. Because His mother was a mortal, Mary, and His Father was the immortal God, our Heavenly Father, Christ had a dual nature of immortality and mortality. Because of this nature, He was able to die and then raise Himself from the dead. Christ’s dual nature also allowed Him to experience all of the pain and suffering that had been and ever will be in the world.

The most important event in Christ’s life was His atonement. While I do not understand the details of how the atonement works, I do know that the atonement of Jesus Christ provides the power we need as imperfect mortals to change our lives. Any time we change our lives for the better we are able to leave our worse selves behind because of Christ’s atonement.

Because Christ atoned for us we are able to both repent from our sins and be resurrected. The purpose of the atonement is to make each of us at one with God. This means that the ultimate aim of the atonement was to allow each of us to return to God’s presence and to live forever like He does. Because no one on this earth is perfect and because only perfect beings can live with and be like God, we need help. This help is available through the atonement. Christ’s suffering for our sins allows us to be cleansed and purified through that atonement. Christ’s resurrection will allow all of us to be resurrected and return to God.

I know that Christ lives. I know that He atoned for my sins and for the sins of the whole world. I know that He died and was resurrected that each of us may also live again. I know that He lives today and that He still speaks to men on earth. I know that Christ is the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

Scriptures about Christ

“Listen to him who is the advocate with the Father, who is pleading your cause before him—Saying: Father, behold the sufferings and death of him who did no sin, in whom thou wast well pleased; behold the blood of thy Son which was shed, the blood of him whom thou gavest that thyself might be glorified; Wherefore, Father, spare these my brethren that believe on my name, that they may come unto me and have everlasting life.” — D&C 45:3-5

One of the great consolations of this Easter season is that because Jesus walked such a long, lonely path utterly alone, we do not have to do so.
