Mormon FAQ

On this page I”ll attempt to answer some of the more frequently asked questions regarding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). As I’ve said on other pages, I don’t pretend to be an expert on all subjects and although I strive to keep my comments and thoughts in accordance with church doctrine, none of this should be considered official church doctrine. I hope these thoughts will be helpful and can point you in the right direction to learn more about the church.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Mormon’s Christians?

Yes! The name of the church says it all. The full name of the Mormon church is “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” Mormon’s believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior of the World. We believe that he was born to Mary in Bethlehem, that he taught in Jerusalem and the surrounding area, and that he performed many miracles. Most importantly we believe that he suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane and that he died on the cross. After three days he was resurrected and appeared to many people. Because of the atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ, every man, woman, and child that has ever lived on this earth will be resurrected and will return to God to be judged. Because of the atonement, we can all repent of our sins and mistakes and return to live with our Father, God, someday. (Read more here)

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Yes! I know that often when people think about prophets an image comes to mind of an old man with a long, windswept white beard wearing a robe and carrying a staff. Perhaps he looks like the quintessential image of Moses from the Old testament! I can see how it would be easy to ask, “Where is that kind of a person today?” The prophets that God has called in our day don’t look like the Moses character we may imagine, but they do share the essential characteristics with the ancient prophets. A prophet is someone who receives the will of God for the people. The prophet’s job is to learn directly from God, through revelation, what His will is for us and then to teach us what that will is. God calls prophets because He loves us. He wants to provide us, today, with the same kind of guidance and direction that he provided to people in Moses’ time. I know that there is a living prophet on the earth today and I’m grateful for this evidence of God’s love for me.

Does the Mormon Church endorse political parties?

The Mormon Church does not endorse political parties or candidates for public office. It does, however, encourage its members to be active participants in government and in political issues. We believe in honoring the laws of the land and we believe that we should be able to practice our religion without breaking those laws. We also believe that all other people, from whatever religious persuasion, should also have the right to worship however they desire. Occasionally the church will speak about issues that seem political but these issues always align with truths that have been revealed to modern prophets.

How can we increase our faith in Jesus Christ?

That’s a great question! Having faith in Jesus Christ means trusting that he is even thought we can’t see him. Our faith in Jesus Christ increases primarily in two ways. First we increase our faith by learning more about Jesus Christ. We learn about His life and ministry through the scriptures, the Bible and the Book of Mormon. As we read the accounts of people that did see and know Christ, we can see how he has influenced their lives and how he can influence our lives in similar ways. Second we increase our faith by following the commandments. Christ taught, “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself” (John 7:17). As we follow the commandments of Christ, we will see the blessings of following those commandments in our lives and this will increase our faith.

What do Mormons believe concerning the doctrine of grace?

We believe that it is through the grace, or Atonement, of Jesus Christ that we are saved. We also believe that there is no other way to come to God, our Heavenly Father, except through Jesus Christ. In spite of our weaknesses and our sins, Christ has provided the opportunity for all of us to return to God. We do not, however, believe in a passive application of grace. We believe that action is requires on our part to make grace operate in our lives. This action is repentance. In other words, we access Christ’s offered grace as we strive to better our lives by repenting of our sins and bad habits and striving to overcome our mortal weaknesses.
