On this page I”ll attempt to answer some of the more frequently asked questions regarding The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). As I’ve said on other pages, I don’t pretend to be an expert on all subjects and although I strive to keep my comments and thoughts in accordance with church doctrine, none of this should be considered official church doctrine. I hope these thoughts will be helpful and can point you in the right direction to learn more about the church.
Are Mormon’s Christians?
Yes! The name of the church says it all. The full name of the Mormon church is “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” Mormon’s believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, the Savior of the World. We believe that he was born to Mary in Bethlehem, that he taught in Jerusalem and the surrounding area, and that he performed many miracles. Most importantly we believe that he suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemane and that he died on the cross. After three days he was resurrected and appeared to many people. Because of the atonement and resurrection of Jesus Christ, every man, woman, and child that has ever lived on this earth will be resurrected and will return to God to be judged. Because of the atonement, we can all repent of our sins and mistakes and return to live with our Father, God, someday. (Read more here)
Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?
Yes! I know that often when people think about prophets an image comes to mind of an old man with a long, windswept white beard wearing a robe and carrying a staff. Perhaps he looks like the quintessential image of Moses from the Old testament! I can see how it would be easy to ask, “Where is that kind of a person today?” The prophets that God has called in our day don’t look like the Moses character we may imagine, but they do share the essential characteristics with the ancient prophets. A prophet is someone who receives the will of God for the people. The prophet’s job is to learn directly from God, through revelation, what His will is for us and then to teach us what that will is. God calls prophets because He loves us. He wants to provide us, today, with the same kind of guidance and direction that he provided to people in Moses’ time. I know that there is a living prophet on the earth today and I’m grateful for this evidence of God’s love for me.
Does the Mormon Church endorse political parties?
The Mormon Church does not endorse political parties or candidates for public office. It does, however, encourage its members to be active participants in government and in political issues. We believe in honoring the laws of the land and we believe that we should be able to practice our religion without breaking those laws. We also believe that all other people, from whatever religious persuasion, should also have the right to worship however they desire. Occasionally the church will speak about issues that seem political but these issues always align with truths that have been revealed to modern prophets.
